Tata Communications invests USD 152 million in subsea cables to strengthen India-Singapore AI connectivity

The company is increasing subsea capacity between Mumbai, Chennai and Singapore to support rising AI, cloud and data centre traffic across one of Asia's busiest digital corridors.

Tata Communications is investing USD 152 million in subsea cable infrastructure to strengthen connectivity between India and Singapore as enterprises increase AI, cloud and data-intensive workloads across the region.

The investment will add 98 Tbps of AI-ready network capacity across the India-Singapore digital corridor, supporting growing enterprise, hyperscaler, cloud and data centre traffic between India, Southeast Asia and global markets.

As part of the investment, Tata Communications will integrate a new subsea cable system between Mumbai and Singapore. It is also investing as a consortium member in a new Chennai-Singapore subsea cable system, which is expected to become ready for service in the fourth quarter of 2029.

According to the company, the India-Singapore subsea route is expected to become one of the world's most important digital corridors, carrying increasing volumes of enterprise, cloud and AI traffic between the two regions.

Tata Communications said the investment will address rising bandwidth requirements driven by AI, cloud computing and data-intensive enterprise applications.

The additional capacity will improve network diversity, resilience and low-latency connectivity while enabling enterprises to connect more efficiently across India, Southeast Asia and international markets.

Tata Communications’ executive vice president – core and next-gen connectivity services and chief technology officer, Genius Wong, said the investment reflects the company's long-term strategy of building digital infrastructure for AI-driven enterprise growth.

"As global demand for digital and AI-driven services continues to accelerate, these investments reinforce our commitment to building future-ready digital infrastructure at scale," Wong said.

He added that the company is combining near-term capacity enhancements with long-term infrastructure investments to improve the reliability, scalability and performance of connectivity solutions across one of the world's busiest digital corridors.

Strengthening enterprise and data centre connectivity

The new subsea infrastructure will integrate with Tata Communications' terrestrial fibre network across India, extending connectivity beyond cable landing stations to enterprise locations nationwide.

According to the company, the cable systems will connect over 100 data centres across India, enabling enterprises to build scalable connectivity between Indian facilities, Singapore's cloud ecosystem and global digital infrastructure.

The expanded network will also strengthen Tata Communications' IZO connectivity portfolio, including IZO DC Dynamic Connectivity and IZO Multi-cloud Connectivity.

The company said these services provide self-healing, always-on and self-provisioning capabilities, allowing enterprises to activate network capacity on demand and integrate connectivity across multiple data centres and cloud environments.

Expanding AI-ready digital infrastructure

The investment builds on Tata Communications' broader strategy of expanding infrastructure to support enterprise AI adoption and hybrid cloud deployments.

The company operates over 500,000 kilometres of subsea optical fibre and over 200,000 kilometres of terrestrial fibre globally, connecting enterprises, cloud providers and digital infrastructure across multiple regions.

In 2025, Tata Communications integrated the Tata Global Network Intra-Asia 2 (TGN-IA2) submarine cable into its global network, improving latency, increasing network diversity and strengthening resilience across intra-Asia routes.

With the latest investment, Tata Communications is expanding capacity across its Tata Global Network to support the next phase of enterprise AI adoption, cloud growth and data centre expansion while reinforcing India's position as a growing digital and AI hub.
