Digital transformation in the Philippines

Compared to other nations in Southeast Asia, the Philippines continues to play catch up in its digital ambitions. While there continues to be significant investments and digital opportunities in the country, the speed of adoption is still not at a pace that it should be.

With digital transformation the underlying theme of the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, the goal is to bridge the digital divide across the country. According to statistics, nearly 40% of the country still lacks reliable internet access. This has prompted the approval of the Philippine Digitial Infrastructure Project by the country’s president. The US$288 million project is intended to boost broadband connectivity in the country, especially in its remote areas and islands.

At the same time, a lack of infrastructure and resources as well as limited skillsets in the country continue to hinder AI development. These shortages create talent gaps that make it harder to develop and implement AI solutions.

Interestingly, the e-Conomy SEA 2023 report by Google, Temasek and Bain & Company revealed that the digital economy in the Philippines is projected to reach US$150 billion in GMV by 2030, with the e-commerce sector driving growth. In fact, the Philippines’ digital economy amounted to US$35.4 billion in 2023, contributing 8.4% to the country’s GDP.
