Microsoft makes billion-dollar investments in Thailand and Singapore
The investments will focus on cloud and AI infrastructure as well as skills development in both countries.
Microsoft announced huge investment in Thailand and Singapore recently that is not only driving AI adoption but also enhancing the skills capabilities in both countries. In Thailand, Microsoft announced a US$1 billion investment to advance its cloud and AI infrastructure and ongoing operations across Thailand while in Singapore, Microsoft announced a US$5.5 billion investment also in cloud and AI infrastructure and ongoing operations in Singapore during the five years from 2025 through 2029.
According to Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President at Microsoft, the investment in Thailand is part of the vendor’s Advancing National Growth, Prosperity, and Global Competitiveness with AI initiative, which supports trusted and inclusive access to cloud and AI technology as well as enabling the skilling of millions of Thai citizens across every sector of the economy.
Smith explained that as cloud and AI become central to economic growth and national competitiveness, countries need both access to world‑class technology and the know‑how to put it to work. The investment also builds on a partnership with the Royal Thai Government that has been growing since November 2023.
“Microsoft is proud to support Thailand’s vision for secure cloud and AI, combining trusted infrastructure, secure platforms, and skills so AI adoption translates into real competitiveness and job creation,” Smith said.
For Thailand Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, the country’s ambition is to grow as a regional driving force in Asia’s digital and AI economy.
“To achieve this, we are focusing on building stronger foundations for the years to come – with a national digital and AI strategy that prepares our economy for opportunities presented by new S-curve industries while also equipping Thai people with the capability to make the best use of advanced technologies. Microsoft’s announcement today is a direct contribution to that effort and a clear expression of confidence in Thailand’s future,” the Prime Minister said.
Microsoft will also be working with leading Thai and global partners, including Gulf Development Public Company Limited and Advanced Info Service as well as Charoen Pokphand Group (CP Group), True Corporation and True Internet Data Center (True IDC) on developing the cloud and AI data center infrastructure in Thailand.
The vendor believes the partnerships will create lasting economic value for Thailand and could generate new skilled employment opportunities for Thai professionals. With over 2 million Thais already trained in AI by Microsoft over the past two years, the tech giant is also accelerating Thailand’s workforce readiness through a partnership with the Ministry of Labour’s Department of Skill Development (DSD), aiming to upskill and certify 150,000 workers.
“AI is a powerful force for inclusive growth, and Thailand has a remarkable opportunity to extend its impact to everyone, With intelligence in the hands of every Thai, we enable everyone to innovate and grow in the way they decide. One person, a small business, a large company or a government agency can make real impact, change the way we work, or create new opportunities we have never seen before. This is how AI can create genuine competitive advantage for Thailand and help us build a better society for all,” Dhanawat Suthumpun, Managing Director, Microsoft Thailand and Emerging Markets added.
Investment in Singapore
Over in Singapore, Microsoft’s US$5.5 billion investment in cloud and AI infrastructure will be supporting ongoing operations in the country over the next five years. Smith shared that the ongoing investment in cloud and AI infrastructure reflects Microsoft’s long-term confidence in Singapore as a global digital leader.
Apart from the investment, Microsoft also announced that tertiary education students in Singapore will now have free access to Microsoft 365 Premium with Copilot and the company’s suite of productivity tools, while all educators will be provided free AI training through Microsoft Elevate for Educators, and Microsoft Elevate for Changemakers will upskill nonprofit leaders. This will benefit about 200,000 students currently enrolled in university and vocational training institutions in the country.
“Together, we’re focused on helping people and organizations use AI by strengthening skills, increasing cybersecurity and resilience, and advancing trusted governance so technology delivers real benefits for Singaporeans,” Smith said.
For Dr. Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State at the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment in Singapore, baseline AI skills are increasingly becoming as fundamental as digital literacy.
“By equipping students with a hands on experience using AI tools, and supporting our educators to adopt them confidently, we are strengthening the foundations for Singapore’s future workforce, and training them to use AI with confidence, discernment and trust,” the senior minister said.
Wee Luen Chia, Managing Director, Microsoft Singapore believes that Microsoft’s commitment to Singapore reinforcers its pivotal role as an AI innovation hub in Asia.
“We’re all-in on Singapore’s AI future, and access and skills will be fundamental to fully realizing this nation’s ambitions. By embedding AI literacy into everyday learning and in how every sector from enterprise to nonprofits operate, we’re building on the National AI Strategy 2.0 to drive inclusive, trusted AI adoption for genuine impact,” Chia said.
