Maxis migrates mission critical workloads to AWS Malaysia Region

Maxis is the first telco company to migrate mission-critical workloads from AWS Singapore region to the AWS Malaysia region.

When AWS launched the Malaysian Region in August 2024, one of its core purposes was to enable businesses in Malaysia to not only meet data sovereignty requirements but also have lower latency in running mission-critical workloads. These would normally be a need for large enterprises like financial institutions and such.

As one of the largest telecommunications providers in Malaysia, Maxis Berhad has just completed the migration of its mission-critical workloads from AWS Singapore region to the AWS Malaysia region. Not only is Maxis the first local telco provider to achieve this milestone, the company is now also capable of providing more services to their customers.

The migration included 100% of its digital workloads, such as the Maxis and Hotlink apps that serve millions of customers. With the workloads now hosted locally, Maxis has reduced latency, resulting in faster response times and a smoother user experience. This move also drives operational efficiency and a more cost-effective operating model by eliminating cross-region data traffic, enabling the company to focus on value creation.

The migration journey involved the telco’s internal cloud engineering team leading the transition, highlighting the company’s technical capabilities. Maxis has been on a cloud journey with AWS since 2016, with expertise built out in the telco since the cloud journey began nearly a decade ago.

“By bringing our mission-critical workloads home, we are securing our data within Malaysia’s borders while improving efficiency to better serve our customers. This ensures our infrastructure is resilient and future-ready to support the nation’s digital agenda.” Ng May Ching, Chief Information Officer at Maxis said.

For Prateek Pashine, Chief Enterprise Business Officer at Maxis, navigating local cloud migration for their own operations reinforces the telco’s ability to help Malaysian businesses achieve the same outcome.

“We are well-positioned to help customers address data sovereignty requirements while delivering the fast, reliable, and secure connectivity they need for responsive performance,” Pashine said.

“Telecommunications networks are the unseen infrastructure that keeps Malaysia's digital economy running — powering millions of critical services every day," Hussein Mohd Ali, Country Manager, AWS Malaysia commented.

"By building on the AWS Malaysia Region, Maxis’ successful migration demonstrates what's achievable, and positions them to guide other Malaysian enterprises through their own cloud transformations,” he added.

Maxis is also an AWS Advanced Tier Services Partner and AWS Direct Connect Partner in Malaysia. The telco provides expert guidance to help businesses build, optimize, and integrate secure, high-performance cloud connectivity.
