Malaysia and Singapore’s role in Micron Technology’s US$1 trillion market capitalization
With facilities in both Malaysia and Singapore, Micron Technology has all the ingredients in place to meet customer demand for its products.
Micron Technology recently became the latest company to reach a US$1 trillion market capitalization due to the continuous demand for its High-Bandwidth Memory chips that is needed to support global AI demand. The chip company is known for its rich portfolio of high-performance DRAM, NAND and NOR memory and storage products.
In the US, Micron celebrated the start of its 1α (1-alpha) DRAM manufacturing at its Manassas, Virginia. As the only United States manufacturer of memory, Micron is uniquely positioned to strengthen America’s domestic memory supply, with the fab representing an important step in the company's efforts to significantly expand in memory manufacturing in the country.
Outside of US, Micron has fabs around the world with big plans announced earlier this year for expansion in Singapore. Micron also has a strong presence in Malaysia, whereby the fabs there play a critical role is the assembling of components for the chip company.
Amarjit Sandhu, Corporate Vice President, Assembly & Test NAND Operations, Micron Technology and Joshua Lee, Corporate Vice President and Singapore Country Manager, Micron Technology explain to CRN Asia more about the opportunities both these countries play to Micron Technology.
For Sandhu, Malaysia holds a uniquely strategic position in the global semiconductor and AI supply chain, and Micron's long-standing presence in the country reflects that conviction. Since establishing our first facility in Malaysia in Muar, Johor in 2010, Micron has found Malaysia to be an ideal manufacturing base, anchored by a robust electronics supply chain ecosystem, reliable logistics infrastructure, and a favorable business environment that enables seamless integration within its global network.
“Our three sites across Penang and Johor support leading-edge assembly and test for SSDs, NAND, PCDRAM and memory modules. Penang is focused on wafer-in-SSD/module-out capabilities, while our Muar facility in Johor assembles multichip packages and NOR flash crucial to the automotive sector. Malaysia is where Micron brings its most advanced products to life, from qualification through to production. The world's first high-capacity 256GB LPDRAM SOCAMM2, purpose-built for AI data center infrastructure, is being produced here. That reflects the depth of capability our teams in Penang have built, and it gives us strong confidence in where this partnership with Malaysia is heading,” Sandhu explained.
For Lee, with close to three decades of presence, Singapore is Micron's NAND Center of Excellence, delivering world-leading 3D NAND technology that fuels customers' AI innovations across the data center and all the way to the intelligent edge.
“Singapore operations have evolved from purely manufacturing into a site that co-locates R&D alongside production, fostering a vibrant ecosystem for innovation and strengthening the semiconductor value chain. We have a deep partnership with the Singapore government, as well as the broader semiconductor ecosystem, supporting industry growth and supply chain resilience while strengthening local capabilities across manufacturing and technology development,” Lee said.
Meeting the global demand
According to Lee, Micron leverages its global manufacturing footprint and resilient supply chain ecosystem to provide diversified operations to meet customers' needs, regardless of any situations we may face. He added that the company has diversified sourcing manufacturing materials, maintaining appropriate inventory to support our business, and working closely with suppliers to facilitate uninterrupted supply.
“Singapore plays an important role as Micron’s NAND Center of Excellence, with our upcoming facilities providing essential capacity to support continued technology transitions and to meet long-term demand for advanced storage solutions. Our smart manufacturing environment, which deploys AI-enabled automation, advanced robotics and intelligent systems, enhances our efficiency, productivity and operational resilience at scale. All of these will further strengthen Singapore’s position as a critical node in the global semiconductor supply chain,” he explained.
With a huge investment and expansion plans announced earlier this year in Singapore, Lee highlighted that the new advanced wafer fabrication facility, which is set to become Singapore's first double-story wafer fab for production of advanced NAND, will provide essential capacity to support continued technology transitions and position Micron to meet long-term demand for advanced storage solutions.
“This facility helps us address growing market demand for NAND technology driven by the rapid expansion of AI and data-centric applications. This complements our previously announced HBM advanced packaging facility, which is on track to contribute meaningfully to Micron's HBM supply in calendar year 2027. As HBM becomes part of our Singapore manufacturing footprint, we expect opportunities for synergies between our NAND and HBM production,” he said.
Building talent in the industry
For Lee, what matters even more are the capabilities and talent Micron is building through these new investments. With these expansion projects, Micron will be creating about 3,000 new roles focused on packaging development, assembly and test operations, fab engineering and operations, integrating AI, advanced robotics, and smart manufacturing technologies.
Echoing Lee’s sentiments, Sandhu shared that talent is one of the most critical enablers of semiconductor advancement and building a pipeline capable of supporting world-class manufacturing is a long-term undertaking that requires sustained commitment from industry, academia and government alike. In Malaysia, Micron has scaled from zero to approximately 5,000 team members, reflecting the strength of the talent it has built here.
“We approach it from multiple angles: upskilling our existing workforce through AI workshops and the Technical Leadership Pathway, building a pipeline through partnerships with 12 universities including the Semiconductor Assembly and Test Program (SAT-Pro) with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and UOW-KDU, and broadening our talent pool through inclusive hiring. The Veteran MyWIRA program, through which we have hired 49 veterans, and the hiring of people with disabilities are examples of that commitment. Moving forward, we see it as our responsibility to be part of the solution to create an industry-ready workforce through early STEM education and to upskill and reskill our team members accordingly. Micron Malaysia being ranked highly for large organizations on the inaugural Great Place to Work Malaysia 2026 list reflects the kind of workplace we have built,” Sandhu said.
AI in manufacturing
Given the capabilities of AI in modern manufacturing facilities and fabs, Sandhu pointed out that AI plays a critical role in strengthening Micron’s advanced manufacturing here in Malaysia, improving process precision, supporting predictive maintenance, and optimizing yield across our assembly and test operations.
He highlighted Micron Malaysia's manufacturing flexibility, spanning NAND, PCDRAM, SSDs and memory modules including SOCAMM2, provides the scale and diversity of solutions required to power AI workloads end-to-end. At the same time, Micron is developing an AI-ready workforce by upskilling its people with data, automation and digital capabilities, through workshops, gamification approaches and structured training sessions.
“Beyond our facility, Micron Malaysia advances STEM education, AI literacy, and inclusive innovation across Malaysia. As a technology leader, we recognize the transformative potential of artificial intelligence – not just for the industry, but for communities and future generations. Through a grant by the Micron Foundation, we supported the AI Horizon workshops and competitions that directly engaged over 550 secondary students from the B40 community. We see all these as inseparable: smarter manufacturing and smarter people, advancing together with the community,” he added.
In Singapore, Lee pointed out that Micron Singapore has been designated as an Advanced Fourth Industrial Revolution Lighthouse and Sustainability Lighthouse by the World Economic Forum's Global Lighthouse Network. In fact, Micron Singapore is the first front-end semiconductor fab in the world to receive both recognitions. For Lee, it reflects Micron’s leading position in using AI to drive sustainable manufacturing and in proactively adopting eco-efficient operations.
“Micron has transformed from simply enabling AI to becoming an AI-driven manufacturer, and that shift runs across our facilities and our people. Our sites deploy AI-enabled automation, advanced robotics – including the use of collaborative robots in some areas – and intelligent systems to enhance efficiency and productivity at scale. We embed AI literacy across the organization so that everyone, regardless of role, can apply these capabilities in meaningful ways, whether to automate tasks, enhance productivity, or unlock new ways of working,” Lee added.
Contributing to global R&D
The plants in Singapore and Malaysia both contribute to Micron’s global R&D as well. In Singapore, Lee explained that Micron has already expanded capabilities from just manufacturing activities to include world-class R&D activities.
“Our new advanced wafer fab, which will be in operation in 2028, will co-locate R&D with manufacturing to improve efficiencies, accelerate time-to-market and deepen research partnerships between industry and academia,” Lee said.
With talent one of the most critical enablers of semiconductor advancement, Lee added that Micron has been working closely with academia and ecosystem partners to build a future-ready workforce through multiple pathways, from internships and industry postgraduate programs to mentorships for fresh graduates.
“Most recently, through our memorandum of understanding with AI Singapore, we committed to expanding access to AI literacy and strengthening pathways for youth, educators and community partners to seize the opportunities of an AI-enabled future,” he said.
Over in Malaysia, Sandhu mentioned that the Malaysian facilities are where Micron’s most advanced products are brought to life, from qualification through to full production. The engineering work required to qualify and ship a world-first product like the 256GB LPDRAM SOCAMM2 demands deep technical capability, rigorous process development, and a highly skilled workforce.
He added that Micron Malaysia is also at the forefront of research and development of leading-edge semiconductor packaging, enabling high levels of die stacking that power higher-performance, higher-capacity memory and storage solutions. These capabilities are critical to delivering high-density SSDs used in AI data centers, where increasingly large and data-intensive workloads demand both greater storage capacity and faster data access.
“That is the nature of the work happening across our Penang and Johor sites, and it reflects the high-value role Malaysia plays within Micron’s global network. We continue to invest in our people and operations here, and that ongoing commitment is what positions Malaysia well for the future of semiconductor manufacturing,” he concluded.
