Microsoft makes its quantum R&D platform commercially available alongside Majorana 2 launch
Microsoft Discovery is now generally available, giving enterprises access to the same agentic AI research platform behind the Majorana 2 quantum chip's 1,000x reliability gains.
Microsoft has used its annual Build conference to do two things at once: unveil a significantly more reliable quantum chip and open up the AI platform that helped build it to paying customers.
Majorana 2, the company's second-generation topological quantum chip, carries qubits that are 1,000 times more stable than its predecessor, with a mean operational lifetime of 20 seconds compared to the microseconds typical of competing approaches. Microsoft says the improvement puts it on track for a utility-scale quantum computer by 2029, halving its previous target of 2033.
Announced alongside the chip is the general availability of Microsoft Discovery, an agentic AI platform designed for enterprise R&D. The platform deploys autonomous AI agent teams, guided by human researchers, to manage workflows, analyse large volumes of research data, generate hypotheses and optimise experiments in a continuous loop. Enterprise-grade security, governance and compliance controls are built in.
Microsoft's own quantum team used Discovery throughout the Majorana 2 programme, most notably to automate qubit measurement processes that previously took weeks per cycle. Creating a topological quantum state requires setting hundreds of parameters before measurement can even begin, and the team had previously attempted to automate this using earlier machine learning with no success.
Agentic AI made it possible, running voltage adjustments in parallel and building continuous three-dimensional maps of qubit conditions that no individual researcher could replicate manually. The platform also helped synthesise nearly two decades of research data that had been locked in departmental silos across teams spanning physics, mechanical engineering and process engineering in multiple countries.
"As you run AI agents on this data, they're able to essentially resynthesize and make correlations that we as humans cannot see," said Zulfi Alam, corporate vice president for quantum at Microsoft.
The commercial opportunity Microsoft is signalling here is broad. Discovery is already being deployed across life sciences, chemicals, energy and manufacturing. Syensqo, a speciality materials company, is using it to develop next-generation fluids for semiconductor manufacturing.
The more immediate access point is a new Microsoft Discovery app, now in early preview, which individuals can download and run locally using a GitHub Copilot account at no additional cost. Microsoft positions this as the entry point for organisations that want to evaluate agentic R&D workflows before committing to enterprise deployment.
Microsoft has set 2029 as its revised quantum computing milestone, though that target carries the usual caveats of an ambitious hardware roadmap. What is measurable now is that Discovery is a shipping product, Majorana 2 is its most credible reference case, and Microsoft is moving to put both in front of enterprise buyers.
